James “Russ” Heizer was the 2024 Player of the Year tournament winner.
Ranked 29th at year end, he battled his way through 49 others who had earned a
seat at the table for the win. Russ was born in San Jose, grew up in Gilroy, did a
4-year Naval stint, and has lived in Chico almost 30 years. He works at Enloe
Hospital as a Licensed Psychiatric Technician. Russ started playing poker as a
result of the “Moneymaker Effect” He prefers the subtleties of tournaments to
cash games. Russ likens it to a game of chess and feels he reads people well
given his profession Favorite hand? J-10 suited.
