I look at winning a poker tournament as a three step process and have a trio of matching strategies to accomplish that. My first goal is to make the final table. I play fairly tight and watch carefully the remaining player count as the numbers thin out. I fold medium, playable hands to let others implode so I can move up the ladder. That accomplished, finishing in the money is my next goal. My plan is to avoid the big stacks except with premium hands and bully short stacks whenever possible. My personal rule is (almost) never go all-in vs. the big stack at the table. There will be time at some point. The third goal, winning, is a combination of having closely watched your opponents to asses their style of play and, whenever possible use their patterns to your advantage.
